Think about a nonprofit organization for a second. They need $25,000 to close their funding gap, but want to fund other projects as well. They approach a foundation and make a big request for bigger than they need but in line with what they want…$100,000.
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you WANT.
Well, the nonprofit ends up getting a big “no” on their 100K request. Bummer. Or is it? Their initial request was BIG but what they really need is much smaller – only 1/4 of the original ask. So what do they do next? Follow up that “no” with a smaller ask!
When you get a “no”, follow up with your second best offer and you’ll most likely get a “yes”!
They turned a “bummer” into a win by following up with a smaller ask of $25,000. The donor sends back a “yes” to that request. Did the foundation lose? No, they got what they needed even though their request for what they wanted was denied. This week, don’t let a “no” stop you from making some progress. Concede on your original request and you’ll most likely get a “yes” to your second best! Go BIG and end up with a win in the end.
