WW #704 Speed Does Not Fix Wrong
Topic: Systems & Process →We love speed. We celebrate the person who turns things around fast, the team that ships quickly, the week that flew by. But here’s what we need to understand: bad work done fast is still bad work.
Speed is not a result
The fact that something goes quick isn’t something we should be impressed by. In fact, if the work is wrong, speed is something we should be concerned with. If you’re impressed with speed but you’re not impressed with results, you’re focusing on the wrong thing.
It’s like the shiny things painted gold that are actually wood inside. There’s no value just because the outside looks good if the inside is broken.
Fix the work, not the pace
The pace you’re going is not what’s going to fix what’s wrong. What fixes it is making sure you’re doing the right things, and doing them the right way. Once that’s true, speed becomes an advantage instead of a multiplier of mistakes.
Put it into practice this week
- Pick one thing you’re proud of finishing fast. Ask: was it right, or was it just quick?
- Before you speed anything up, check the result it produces. If the result is wrong, slow down and fix that first.
- Share this with someone who needs to hear it.
