WW #703 Fear Produces Movement, Not Direction

Topic: Stress, Fear & Pressure →

Fear is one of the fastest motivators there is. It gets you moving, it gets you moving quickly, and it can even give you the feeling that you’re going somewhere. But there’s a catch: fear produces movement, not direction.

Movement isn’t the same as progress

When fear is driving, there’s no real confidence in where you’re headed or whether you’re moving the right way. You’re reacting. Fear tells you what to run from, but it never tells you where to go.

A lot of us live life like we’re on a treadmill. We’re busy and sweating, but we’re moving where we think we need to go instead of where we actually need to go. That’s why so many people work hard and still never get where they’re trying to go.

Hear your fear. Don’t follow it.

Fear isn’t the enemy. It’s information. We should hear our fear and recognize it, then act with confidence once we understand where we need to go and what we’re supposed to do. And when fear does point you somewhere, it’s usually not the way you need to go.

Put it into practice this week

  • Look at what you’re working on right now and ask: is this moving me closer to where I want to go, or am I just spinning my wheels?
  • For anything you’re doing out of fear, name the fear in one sentence. Then decide what you would do if you were acting from confidence instead.
  • Pick one direction for next week before Monday shows up, so the week doesn’t pick it for you.
