People vs. Systems: Why You Need Both for
Sustainable Growth
When I first started my journey as an entrepreneur, I believed that good systems were the key to success, and I thought I could worry less about having the right people in place. But over time, I realized something crucial: with the right people, you don’t always need great systems. So which is the better decision—prioritizing systems or prioritizing people?
The answer is both.
The Real Problem: A Lack of Alignment
The issue isn’t that we fail to create good systems or that we don’t have good people. The real problem is that we don’t give good people what they need, and we don’t give systems what they need.
Here’s what happens far too often:
A company invests heavily in new systems, strategies, or mission statements but fails to integrate them with the people who execute them.
Employees don’t see how the system benefits them, leading to resistance, confusion, or inefficiency.
The system is abandoned, and leadership wonders why their expensive investment didn’t work.
How to Make Systems and People Work Together
A system alone doesn’t create success—it’s the proper implementation of the system that makes it valuable. That means:
Connecting the system to the individual. Every employee should see how it benefits them personally, not just how it helps the company.
Providing clear training and integration. A system without clarity is just added complexity.
Making the system adaptable. People should feel empowered to refine and optimize processes rather than being stuck in rigid frameworks.
The Missed Opportunity for Sustainable Growth
Many companies spend enormous amounts of money on systems, strategies, and leadership coaching, yet still struggle to achieve real, lasting change. Why? Because they fail to connect those efforts to the people executing them.
When you align great systems with great people, you create a sustainable, growth-oriented company—one that runs efficiently even when you’re not there. That’s the true path to entrepreneurial freedom.
