WW #582 - Knowing What Someone's Grateful For Will Allow You To Motivate Them To Do Anything

Updated: Aug 21

If you want someone to do something for you—whether at work, in relationships, or in life—the most effective approach is to first discover what they are grateful for. When you connect your request to what they value, you create a win–win relationship where both sides benefit. It becomes a symbiotic exchange, grounded in mutual respect and alignment.

Motivation: Two Very Different Paths

There are two ways to inspire action: manipulation and enlightenment.

  • Manipulation involves skillful control—but while it may work in the short term, it ultimately drives people apart and damages trust.

  • Enlightenment, in contrast, involves sharing a broader understanding and insight. When people see the positive side of what you’re asking—and understand how it connects to something meaningful—they’re naturally motivated—and you build stronger relationships.

Choose enlightenment. It brings people together.

Gratitude as a Motivational Force

Gratitude is uniquely powerful at inspiring action. When people see their contributions benefitting others—and witness genuine appreciation—their motivation is renewed. Likewise, if you align your request with what they're grateful for, motivation arises from within, not from external pressure.

How to Motivate in the Right Way

  1. Listen Intently – Understand what they truly value and appreciate.

  2. Connect to Their Gratitude – Link what you need them to do with what matters most to them.

  3. Lead with Enlightenment, Not Manipulation – Frame your ask through perspective and understanding, not force or control.

When you motivate through gratitude and enlightenment, you foster trust, alignment, and lasting results.

This Week’s Challenge

Think of someone you're trying to motivate. Instead of pushing your agenda, pause and ask: What are they grateful for? Then connect your request to that. You may just find they become your most willing and inspired partner.
