Motivation is a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way. But, how do we best motivate others? It is by knowing what they are grateful for. It can provide us with insights about their values and motivation. Understanding what someone is grateful for can certainly help you build rapport and create a positive relationship with them.

Gratitude motivates people to become better. It has been a hot topic in recent years. Much of this enthusiasm has been fueled by research linking gratitude to happiness, health, and stronger relationships. Research found that gratitude is not just a pleasant and passive emotion. It is an activating, energizing force that may lead us to pursue our goals and become better.

There are identified distinct pathways through which expressing gratitude can motivate people to improve themselves and their communities.

  • Connectedness

By strengthening our social bonds, gratitude rewards us with a strong network of support and encouragement. This will lead us to feel that we are capable of tackling big challenges. Feeling close and connected to others may motivate us to improve ourselves. We can also become better people because we want to prove that we are worthy of our relationships.

  • Elevation

Gratitude makes people feel elevated—which then bolsters their motivation and effort toward self-improvement. Elevation is the uplifting feeling we get when we see people performing great acts of kindness. There are findings that suggest that feeling elevated may motivate us to become more generous and more productive individuals.

  • Humility

Expressing gratitude takes the focus off of ourselves and forces us to recognize that our successes are due, at least in part, to the actions of other people. Humility enables us to see clearly how others have supported us. It can also encourage us to engage in positive behaviors, such as helping others and bettering ourselves.

  • Indebtedness

There are findings that suggest that some negative emotions particularly indebtedness may be especially motivating to us. This will ignite our willpower to reciprocate the good others have given us and in the process, we can get rid of the psychological debts that we carry.

Motivating others can be a complex task. This is because different people respond to various forms of motivation. What best way to start it is to know what are the things that they are grateful for.

Gratitude has the power to do more than make us happy and motivate us to improve our lives. It can also inspire us to become more productive members of society and we can make this world a better place to live in. Reflect on what are the things you are grateful for. Use them to motivate you to move forward towards your life goals.

Let us help you become motivated and become a better version of yourself.
