Our reactions are reflections of our inner thoughts and feelings. The level of perception and processing of the external environment is different for everyone. But one thing is universal, our current mental state and emotions. They are the main factors in how we react to them. We tend to react based on what we feel.

What we think impacts what we feel

Our thoughts and emotions have a serious effect on one another. The thoughts can trigger emotions. For example, a person with a fear of dogs is likely hyperattentive of the dog across the street and appraises the approach of the dog as threatening, which leads to emotional distress. Another person who appraises the dog’s approach as friendly will have a very different emotional response to the same situation.

However, we have a choice. We have complete control over our emotions and are accountable for our actions. We have the ability to look at things from different perspectives. Negativity may surround us but we have a choice to take positively. It just needs a deeper understanding that there is beauty in every ugly circumstance.

The external environment will provoke us to be violent, trigger us to be sad, and push us to be angry, but we have the choice to internalize things positively. Internalizing the external for us to respond is a life-long cycle, so we have to master the power of choosing the best reaction which will benefit our future.

Moreover, at the end of the day, we have to be mindful of our reactions because it’s reflections of our inner thoughts and feelings. Oftentimes, we have no control over situations but we always have control of our actions.
